Yaw Named to Key Senate Committees for 2015-16 Legislative Session

HARRISBURG – State Senator Gene Yaw (R-23) has been named to seven key Senate committees whose jurisdiction has a direct impact on the economy and the lives of every Pennsylvanian.  Yaw will serve on the following committees during the 199th Session of the General Assembly, as announced by President Pro Tempore Joe Scarnati (R-25).

  • Environmental Resources & Energy, Chairman
  • Agriculture & Rural Affairs
  • Banking & Insurance
  • Judiciary
  • Law & Justice
  • Rules and Executive Nominations
  • Majority Policy

“I am honored by these appointments from Senator Scarnati,” Yaw said.  “The issues covered by these committees are truly critical to the 23rd Senate District and the citizens of Pennsylvania.”

Earlier this month, Senator Scarnati lauded Yaw’s work as Environmental Resources & Energy Chairman saying, “Senator Yaw has provided great leadership for environmental and energy issues in the past, and I am confident that he will continue to provide strong direction for the Committee over the next two years.”

In his new role on the Senate Banking and Insurance Committee, Yaw will work to provide valuable oversight on areas that include banking, insurance, securities, finance and economic policy throughout the Commonwealth.

“Senator Yaw is a one of the most thoughtful and active members of our caucus,” said Senator Don White, Chairman of the Senate Banking and Insurance Committee.  “Through my work with him on other committees, I believe he will be a tremendous asset to the Banking and Insurance Committee.  I look forward to working with him on the significant issues that will come before the committee this session.”

Through his appointment to the Senate Agriculture & Rural Affairs Committee, Senator Yaw will continue to serve as a strong champion of Pennsylvania agriculture, promoting common-sense legislation that meet the needs of Pennsylvania farmers, small businesses and those who rely on Pennsylvania products.

Senator Yaw will also serve on the Senate Judiciary and Law & Justice Committees.  The committees consider a wide variety of measures relating to law, courts and judges.  Current matters at the forefront of committee activity include firearms, liquor privatization and medical marijuana.

Additionally, Senator Yaw will again join the Rules and Executive Nominations Committee, which considers proposals concerning the rules, organization, and procedures of the Senate. The Committee decides on re-referral of legislation to standing committees for consideration.  Further, the Committee examines gubernatorial nominations requiring Senate confirmation and reports its recommendations.

Finally, Senator Yaw will work with Senator Dave Argall (R-29), Chairman of the Senate Majority Policy Committee, to examine issues that are of importance to Pennsylvania residents and seeking input on how state policies and laws can be developed to address them.
