Dear Friend, In an effort to keep you informed about state and local issues, I have developed this e-newsletter which I will be sending out to residents of the 23rd District. I think it is a fast, convenient and affordable way to get news out to area residents. I hope you find this e-newsletter useful and informative – and if you know of someone else who would like to receive it, please feel free to forward this email. I-80 Tolling Rejection is Right Decision for PA Like many people in this district, I am very pleased with the U.S. Department of Transportation's recent decision to reject the tolling of Interstate 80. I have been strongly opposed to this proposal since its inception and have worked with local and state officials to stop the tolling plan. If approved, it would have put North-Central PA at an economic disadvantage. As a result of the decision, the General Assembly must work with the governor to try and identify an estimated $450 million to make up for the anticipated revenues that tolling would have created. When this issue is addressed again in the General Assembly, we need to ensure that any solution is considered equitable for all of the residents of the Commonwealth and does not require one area of the state to pay for transportation projects. Highlighting Education – Lycoming College
Founded in 1812 in Williamsport, PA, Lycoming College is dedicated to the undergraduate education of more than 1,400 students who have the opportunity to earn a bachelor's degree in 30-plus major areas of study. The student body is supported by more than 300 dedicated faculty and staff members. Lycoming College is proud of its 15,000-plus alumni. Although Lycoming College is one of the 50 oldest institutions of higher learning in the United States, it is a community with new vitality, ongoing momentum and a nationally-recognized commitment to quality education. Lycoming College is classified broadly by the Carnegie Foundation as a Baccalaureate College - Arts & Sciences. More specifically, Lycoming College is one of 44 institutions that is small in size, focused exclusively on undergraduate education, selective in admissions, graduates 80 percent of their students in the arts and sciences, and includes a strong residential experience on campus. Lycoming College has once again been recognized by several national publications as one of America's leading liberal arts colleges. The college has recently been included in rankings released by U.S. News and World Report, The Princeton Review, Washington Monthly and Forbes.com. Student Government Seminar Set for May 20 On May 20th, I will be hosting my annual student government seminar at the Pennsylvania College of Technology in Williamsport. The event gives area students a chance to be "senators for a day" and learn first-hand how the legislative process works. Students will discuss a number of timely issues, including criminal justice, education, Marcellus Shale and health and human services. It's a great way to get young people involved in government and learn more about issues and laws that impact them. Pennsylvania Pure Maple Syrup
Local Students Take Part in Capitol Event On March 23rd, Dan Follmer of Williamsport and Andrew Van Kuren of Rome participated in the sixth semi-annual Undergraduate Research at the Capitol event in Pennsylvania. This event is a poster conference that showcases outstanding and award-winning projects by undergraduate students from Pennsylvania. It provides an opportunity to bring together college students, faculty and Pennsylvania legislators and their staff to share the experiences of students engaged in scholarship and creative endeavors at their colleges and universities.
Experiencing the Local Art Scene Pennsylvania has a long history of supporting the arts. Through the PA Council on the Arts, seven Artisan Trails are set up throughout the state in order to highlight the diversity of the many local artists and their works. The 23rd Senatorial District is fortunate to have significant sections of three of these Artisan Trails running through it. I would like to encourage art lovers of all ages to explore what these trails have to offer. The PA Route 6 Artisan Trail runs along Northern Pennsylvania, and the Route 15 ByWay of the Arts Trail runs through the center of Pennsylvania and offers one the opportunity to see a huge variety of artists perfecting their craft. Art Thrives on 45 is the third trail in our area. Travelling through Union County, it draws attention to historic Pennsylvania life. In addition to the Artisan Trails, you can visit our historic towns and take part in unique cultural events throughout the district as each community has plenty of contemporary and traditional styles for all art enthusiasts. I guarantee you will not be disappointed by what you find. For more information on local Artisan Trails, along with upcoming event information, please visit the website. |
