Yaw Announces Grant for Elkland Twp., Sullivan County

HARRISBURG – State Senator Gene Yaw (R-23) today announced Elkland Township, Sullivan County will receive a $20,000 grant through Pennsylvania’s Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) Bureau of Waterways Engineering Stream Improvement Program (SIP).

The township-based project will consist of emergency flood control work being undertaken by the SIP in partnership with the Natural Resource Conservation Service’s Emergency Watershed Protection Program.

“Following the devastation from Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee, many of our waterways, streams and stream banks were completely decimated,” Yaw said. We have a long road ahead of us to make the necessary repairs, but this funding will certainly assist in that regard.”

In January, Yaw and the Center for Rural Pennsylvania held a listening session to hear from local residents and officials impacted by the flooding in order to improve and eliminate burdensome state regulations for stream maintenance.
