WILLIAMSPORT – State Senator Gene Yaw (R-23) today joined with the Lycoming County Commissioners to applaud the approval of $545,160 in state tax credits by the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency (PHFA) for Williamsport’s Grove Street Common’s Project.
The proposed project, part of the City of Williamsport’s Housing Strategy, will be a 36,000 square foot facility providing for 32 housing units for person 62 and older. The proposed site fronts both Almond and Grove Streets on the east end of the City of Williamsport.
“I was pleased to lend my support for this project application,” Yaw said. “As a result of the increased development in the Marcellus Shale formation, Williamsport and the surrounding area has experienced a housing shortage. In direct response, the Lycoming County Commissioners and Williamsport City Council partnered to create the Williamsport Housing Strategy, which identified and supports the development of Grove Street Commons. Adding the experience of SEDA-COG Housing Development Corporation in completing and professionally managing similar senior housing facilities, such as Mill Race Commons in Montoursville, speaks to the strong aspects of this project. I applaud the success of their application.”

“The County is delighted to help the City reverse the erosion of the property tax base while providing excellent quality housing to our seniors.”
Lycoming County Commissioner Tony Mussare stated:
“We are extremely pleased to learn about PHFA’s announced award of housing tax credits to the SEDA COG Housing Development Corp for the Grove Street Commons senior affordable housing project. This 32-unit project, to be constructed in the City’s east end, is the third major component in the Williamsport Housing Strategy.”

Overall, PHFA awarded $16.8 million in low-income housing tax credits and $1.9 million in PennHOMES funding for the construction of affordable multifamily housing developments located in urban centers throughout Pennsylvania.
“This newly funded housing will benefit low- and moderate-income families, senior citizens, and people with special housing needs,” said PHFA Executive Director and CEO Brian A. Hudson Sr. “Communities thrive when housing is available for people at various income levels, and the funding announced today helps fill that important need.”
A second round of funding for developments in rural and suburban areas will be announced in July.
