HARRISBURG – Korean War veterans across Lycoming County were celebrated Friday for their service more than six decades ago, according to Sen. Gene Yaw (R-23).
During an event held at the Klump Academic Center located on the campus of the Pennsylvania College of Technology in Williamsport, United States Sen. Pat Toomey (R-PA), state Sen. Gene Yaw (R-23), along with U.S. Congressman-Elect Fred Keller (R-12), state Rep. Garth Everett (R-84) and state Rep. Jeff Wheeland (R-83) partnered to honor Korean War veterans residing in Lycoming County with the Korean Ambassador for Peace Medal.
“There are many Korean War veterans across Lycoming County who bravely served our country,” Sen. Yaw said. “My office works tirelessly to assist veterans living in Pennsylvania and this is another great way to honor those who fought for our freedom and recognize their bravery.”
Sen. Toomey’s office worked with the Korean Consul General to provide the medals, which are presented as an expression of appreciation from the Korean government.
To receive the Korean Ambassador for Peace Medal, an eligible veteran must have served in country during the Korean War from June 25, 1950, to July 27, 1953, or have participated in UN peacekeeping operations until the end of 1955. Members of the U.S. Navy are also eligible if they served aboard a naval vessel that was assigned to Korean waters during the 1950-1953 timeframe. It may also be awarded posthumously.
