On
Thursday, May 21st, I held my annual student government seminar on the campus of
the Pennsylvania College of Technology in Williamsport. Over 300 participants
took part in one of Pennsylvania’s largest student government events.
During the event, Sapphire Naugle of Jersey Shore High School was presented with the 2015-16 Peggy Madigan Memorial Leadership Scholarship at the Pennsylvania College of Technology.
Sapphire serves as a volunteer at the local Love Center, and she helps organize local American Red Cross blood drives with the Technology Student Association at Jersey Shore Area High School.
She is also a Relay for Life volunteer and participant. Her extracurricular activities include marching band, jazz band, Manufacturing Club (treasurer), Technology Student Association and the swim team.
Sapphire
has led several service projects including a “shoe box drive” for the
Samaritan’s Purse international relief organization, which distributes boxes of
Christmas gifts to children worldwide. She also participated in a Manufacturing
Club sandwich fundraiser benefitting the Wounded Warrior Project.

CRP Update |
A number of studies have called attention to the growing need for health care professionals, especially primary care physicians, in Pennsylvania in the near future.
For rural Pennsylvania, health care professional shortages are nothing new. In fact, research sponsored by the Center for Rural Pennsylvania (CRP) and conducted by Mansfield University in the early 1990s documented Health Professional Shortage and Medically Underserved Areas in Pennsylvania. The federal Department of Health and Human Services officially approved these designations following the release of that research, and these designations helped rural areas get access to more health care professionals through loan forgiveness programs.
Over the years, however, rural areas still struggled with attracting and retaining health care professionals, and more recent research sponsored by the Center indicates that health care worker job dissatisfaction and potential retirement could intensify shortages in the future.
