Looking Ahead to 2026
In 2026, I’ll continue focusing on strengthening Pennsylvania’s energy sector, keeping the economy competitive, modernizing regulations and ensuring rural communities get their fair share. Take a look back on 2025 and learn more about what’s next HERE. Honoring Local Healthcare Providers
Dr. Alexander R. Nesbitt, M.D., was recently honored on his retirement after a career in medicine spanning 40 years. Dr. Nesbitt is retiring as medical director of UPMC Home Healthcare of Central Pennsylvania and Family Hospice and UPMC Williamsport Supportive and Palliative Care.
Sen. Lynda Schlegel Culver and I also recognized Kendra Aucker, WellSpan Evangelical Community Hospital president and senior vice president of WellSpan North Region, for her retirement after a career spanning more than 30 years. Our region is fortunate to be served by leaders in healthcare whose dedication has strengthened access to quality care close to home. Congratulations to Dr. Nesbitt and Kendra! Wishing you both the best in your next chapters. WLCC Holds Annual Holiday PM Exchange
The Williamsport/Lycoming Chamber of Commerce recently held their annual Holiday PM Exchange at Miele Manufacturing in Muncy. Miele Manufacturing produces innovative products for the amusement industry including Pennsylvania Skill games. Skill games allow small businesses, taverns, convenience stores, clubs and veterans’ organizations to earn extra revenue to help pay their staff, pay bills, maintain their establishments and pay for donations that help their communities. Miele Manufacturing provides good paying, family sustaining jobs in our community. Thank you for having us! Help Improve PA’s Business Climate
I’m joining the Pennsylvania Chamber of Business and Industry to gather feedback from businesses and chambers of commerce across the 23rd Senatorial District. Your responses will help guide legislative oversight and future reforms aimed at strengthening Pennsylvania’s business climate. If you’re interested in providing additional feedback, please complete the survey on my website. PA Farm Show Kicks Off Saturday
The 2026 Pennsylvania Farm Show kicks off this Saturday, Jan. 10 and runs through Jan. 17 at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex and Expo Center in Harrisburg. It is the nation’s largest indoor agricultural exposition and features nearly 6,000 animals, competitive events, 250 commercial exhibits and a lot of tasty food options! Plan your visit and check out what’s new this year HERE. New Program Allows College Students to Finish Degree by Completing PSP Academy
The Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) has launched an initiative allowing students in their senior year at participating colleges and universities to earn their remaining credits toward an associate or bachelor’s degree by successfully completing cadet basic training at the Pennsylvania State Police Academy. Partner schools include DeSales University, Keystone College, Saint Vincent College, Mercyhurst University, Luzerne County Community College and Pennsylvania Highlands Community College. The program is open to all majors, and cadets receive paid training, room and board at no cost. More details on requirements and benefits HERE. Heating Assistance Program Now Open
Residents who struggle with their home heating bills can apply for assistance from the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). LIHEAP is a federally funded program that helps individuals and families pay their heating bills through home heating energy assistance grants. It also provides crisis grants to help in the event of an emergency or if a resident is in danger of losing his or her heat due to broken equipment, lack of fuel or termination of utility service. Learn about income eligibility and other details here. Apply online at www.dhs.pa.gov/COMPASS or by phone at 1-866-857-7095. The program runs through April 2026. Successful Start for New Program Connecting Young Pennsylvanians to High-Demand Careers
The first year of the Grow PA program to help connect young people to quality careers in Pennsylvania has been a tremendous success, according to statistics from the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA). The Grow PA Scholarship Grant Program was created by the legislature last year to help reverse the trend of young Pennsylvanians seeking education and job opportunities in other states. The program offers grants of up to $5,000 per year for in-state students who agree to attend college in Pennsylvania, pursue a degree in an in-demand occupation and work in that occupation in Pennsylvania after graduation. PHEAA reports more than 11,000 applications for Grow PA in the first year. More than 4,000 applicants have already received grants, and another 2,300 applications were approved through early December. The average award per student was $4,650. The top programs of study in the first year of Grow PA included registered nursing, early childhood education, business administration and management, biological sciences and accounting. Next year’s application period is expected to open in early February. PA Treasury Mails Nearly 100,000 Money Match Checks
Check your mailboxes, because the Pennsylvania Treasury Department recently mailed nearly 100,000 Pennsylvania Money Match checks totaling more than $22 million. Treasurer Stacy Garrity urges those who receive a check to cash or deposit it immediately – this is a real program, and this money belongs to Pennsylvanians. Money Match, a law that went into effect in 2025, allows the Pennsylvania Treasury to return single-owner unclaimed property valued at $500 or less automatically without the need to search or file a claim. Money Match successfully returned $50 million in its first year and will continue issuing checks quarterly. More than one in 10 Pennsylvanians is owed some of the over $5 billion of unclaimed property in Treasury’s care. The average value of a claim is $1,000. Visit patreasury.gov/unclaimed-property to start searching.
