Music from the Heart

Recently, music class students from Lycoming County performed their fantastic concert, “Music from the Heart,” in the rotunda of the State Capitol.

Every Wednesday, the group gets together to practice the uplifting performance, which includes music from various genres and choreography.

Among them was a very special guest performer, my godson, Kurt Falco, who was also joined by his mom, Kate. We had a great morning at the Capitol with these wonderful students!

Newman Commons Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

Last week, a ribbon cutting ceremony was held for the 44-unit Newman Commons Housing project in Lewisburg. I was pleased to join members of RHW, T-Ross Brothers Construction, Union County Commissioners, WellSpan Evangelical Community Hospital, Union County Housing Authority and the Kelly Township Supervisors to officially mark the completion of the project.

Newman Commons is a service-enhanced housing community designed to meet the needs of seniors aged 62 and older. This project has been several years in the making and will give residents a place to call home that is not only affordable, but conveniently located.

Honoring President Trachte on his Retirement

Congratulations to Lycoming College President Kent Trachte, who will retire in June following more than a decade-long tenure. President Trachte’s leadership has been invaluable in strengthening the college’s academic programs, expanding its campus footprint and forging vital partnerships with the Williamsport community. I extend my gratitude for his dedicated service and offer my best wishes for his next chapter!

Congratulations to this spring’s graduates across the 23rd District!

Northcentral Regional ATV Trail Reopens

The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) has reopened the Northcentral Regional ATV Trail for the 2025 season. The trail offers more than 600 miles of connected roads and trails across Clinton, Lycoming, Potter and Tioga counties, and will remain open through Sunday, September 28.

Although the riding areas will be marked, riders are expected to familiarize themselves with permitted routes to ensure they are operating in legal riding areas. More information and detailed maps can be found HERE.

Local Students Visit Capitol

Thank you to the students from Elkland Elementary School, Northeast Bradford Elementary School, Troy Elementary School and Westfield Elementary School for stopping by our beautiful State Capitol for a tour during your visits to Harrisburg!

2025 Leadership Tioga County

Congratulations to the Leadership Tioga County (LTC) class of 2025! Deb Rudy of my Wellsboro office attended the graduation ceremony on May 21 in Mansfield and presented the graduates with congratulatory Senate certificates.

LTC’s leadership development program connects and engages current and emerging leaders in Tioga County while enhancing skills and understanding of key community issues.

Local FBLA Legislative Luncheons

Recently, both the Jersey Shore Area Chamber of Commerce and the Montoursville Chamber of Commerce held Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) luncheons, where students were presented with scholarships and awards from their respective chambers. Elizabeth Vollman of my Williamsport office attended both events and provided a legislative update.

This year’s Jersey Shore award recipients were:

  • 1st Place – Samara Kisko. Samara is attending Mansfield University in the fall, majoring in Radiology.
  • 2nd Place – Aiden Palmeter. Aiden is attending Pennsylvania College of Technology in the fall, majoring in Nursing.
  • 3rd Place – Benjamin Dalton. Benjamin is attending Lycoming College in the fall, majoring in Actuarial Mathematics.

This year’s Montoursville award recipient was Karleigh McKenna, a senior from Montoursville Area High School. Karleigh has been accepted into the honors program at Penn State University, where she will study Business Administration starting this fall. In addition, Karleigh will be competing at the 2025 FBLA National Leadership Conference in Anaheim, California this summer in the Sales Presentation competition.

Bill to Increase Firefighters in PA Receives Senate Support

Pennsylvania relies on volunteer firefighters, but their numbers are dropping – from 300,000 in the 1970s to fewer than 38,000 today. To help ensure there are enough firefighters to respond to a crisis, the Senate passed a bill that would reform the process for people earning their firefighter certification.

Senate Bill 90 would maintain the high standards to become a firefighter while making it less intimidating for men and women who are interested in serving their communities as volunteer firefighters. Currently, firefighter applicants must complete four training modules totaling 188 hours. They then must pass a cumulative test covering all four modules. The bill would allow them to be tested following each of the four modules.

Senate Bill 90 heads to the House of Representatives for further consideration.

Prevent Surprises on the Road with PennDOT’s Construction Plans

As the weather improves, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is spending more time maintaining the state’s approximately 40,000 roadway miles and 25,400 bridges.

You can be aware of and plan for delays you experience driving by checking the status of construction projects in your area. Information about projects underway, beginning and being bid this year is listed here.

Road work projects are chosen through an extended planning process in four-year and 12-year increments. Learn more about the State Transportation Improvement Plan and the Twelve-Year Program.

Enjoy a Great American Getaway in PA

Tourism is an important part of Pennsylvania’s economy. In 2022, the most recent year with available data, we welcomed more than 192 million travelers and benefited from $45 billion in visitor spending.

The commonwealth has a lot to offer, even to people who call it home. Find some great ideas for vacations and day trips here.
