Farm Show Edition

This week’s special edition E-Newsletter highlights the 108th Pennsylvania Farm Show, held at the Farm Show Complex and Expo Center in Harrisburg.

The PA Farm Show is the nation’s largest indoor agricultural exposition and showcases agriculture and all who make it Pennsylvania’s #1 industry.

It was great to connect with attendees, exhibitors, and competitors last week, including many from right here in the 23rd District.

If you know someone in the agriculture industry, please forward this issue on to them.

Local Organizations Visit PA Farm Show

It was great to see so many familiar faces from around the 23rd District at this year’s farm show!

Students from Canton Future Farmers of America (FFA) set up a fantastic exhibit this year showcasing their produce stand and educating visitors on different types of soil.

Students from Northeast Bradford FFA also showcased their antique tractor restoration. Their 1941 Farmall M took home the “Most Improved” award.

Many young exhibitors from across Bradford, Lycoming, Sullivan, Tioga, and Union Counties enjoyed their first livestock auction experience this year!

Congratulations to Sam Hauck from Winfield, Union County, on his livestock sale! Sam has been raising and showing pigs for 10 years and has won a number of awards at local fairs. This year he showed his cross barrow pig, Mike, and also earned his FFA Keystone Degree.

Congratulations to Ethan Bomgardner of Mifflinburg who received a 2024 Pennsylvania Farm Show Scholarship from the Pennsylvania Farm Show Scholarship Foundation!

Well done, Ethan and best of luck!

Painterland Sisters Yogurt Featured at PA Farm Show

It was great to visit with Hayley and Stephanie Painter, cofounders of Painterland Sisters Yogurt.

Hayley and Stephanie grew up in Westfield, Tioga County at Painterland Farms, a fourth generation family owned operation. They started their organic skyr yogurt brand in 2020 to help preserve their family’s farm. Today, Painterland Sisters can now be found in nearly 2,000 locations at grocery stores across the United States.

The sky is the limit for these two impressive young women!

Union County Farm Earns Bicentennial Farm Designation

The Winfield, Union County Farm of Bret and Mary Moyer was honored with a Bicentennial Farm designation at this year’s farm show.

The farm was established in 1797 by Bret Moyer’s six times great grandfather, a second lieutenant in the Revolutionary War, who purchased 117 acres of farmland, 100 of which are still in use today.

Agriculture and Rural Affairs Joint Hearing

On Wednesday, the state Senate and House Agriculture and Rural Affairs committees gathered for a hearing at the PA Farm Show to discuss the five-year impact of the 2019 Pennsylvania Farm Bill with the main theme of those conversations being agriculture education and access.

At the hearing, testifiers described the immense impact of the PA Farm Bill. Many of the grants created through this bill have allowed for farmers and agricultural organizations to expand their practices, acquire needed equipment, and educate those involved in their day-to-day business.

2024 Farm Show Public Officials Luncheon Held

It was great to hear from Governor Shapiro, Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture Secretary, Russell Redding, as well as United States Department of Agriculture Secretary, Tom Vilsack, at the Farm Show Public Officials Luncheon held last week.

This event provides a great opportunity to connect with farmers, agricultural support organizations, industry members and other officials from local, state, and federal government. We had a productive discussion on the challenges the agriculture industry currently faces and opportunities for future growth.
