HARRISBURG – State Senator Gene Yaw (R-23) awarded a Hughesville High School senior with the 2013 Peggy Madigan Memorial Leadership Scholarship yesterday during his annual Student Government Seminar held at the Pennsylvania College of Technology in Williamsport.
Kyle Bomboy, of Unityville, was awarded the scholarship and will enroll in the physician assistant major this fall at Penn College.
The scholarship – named in memory of the late wife of former state Sen. Roger A. Madigan, who represented the 23rd District – may be used to help defray the costs of tuition, fees, books, tools and other required supplies. Applicants are required to write an essay describing the community service they have performed and the value that service has added to the community.
The scholarship is open to high school students from the district who attend the seminar and subsequently enroll as full-time students at the college.
Among his community-service activities, Bomboy helped with a clothing drive formed at his school after flooding in 2011 affected many in eastern Lycoming County.
As part of the Social Change Competition in the Youth Leadership Program at Penn College, Bomboy’s team developed a project to clean up Hughesville’s Bodine Park. The team attended Borough Council meetings, met with local businesses to solicit donations and presented an action plan to a panel of judges. When the project won full funding, Bomboy directed volunteers as he and his team repaired equipment and cleaned up graffiti in the park. For another aspect of Youth Leadership, Bomboy volunteered with Habitat for Humanity.
As president of Hughesville High School’s National Honor Society chapter, Bomboy has led events like a powder puff football game and a volleyball tournament to raise funds for the Wounded Warrior Project. He has also been a volunteer coach for Little Spartan Football and umpired Little League Baseball games.
At school, Bomboy is a member of Student Council, the Varsity Club, the Advanced Placement Biology Club, the AP Chemistry Club, the AP Statistics Club, the Spartan Scholars and the East Lycoming Graduation Committee. He also competes on the varsity golf and baseball teams.
The annual Student Government Seminar hosted by Yaw enables hundreds of students from high schools throughout the 23rd District to meet with elected officials, members of the state’s executive branch, representatives of special-interest groups and members of the news media for a day of panel discussions providing insights into the workings of state government.
