Senator Yaw Applauds Safe School Targeted Grants for Bradford, Lycoming Schools

HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) today announced the recipients of $9.4 million in competitive 2020-2021 Safe Schools Targeted Grants, according to state Sen. Gene Yaw (R-23).

Yaw noted that the grants were awarded to schools to prevent and reduce violent incidents, to purchase safety and security-related equipment, and to provide for the training and compensation of school resource and police officers.

“Protecting our students, teachers and staff is paramount and this funding will aid in that effort,” Sen. Yaw said.  “I’m proud to join with the Pennsylvania Department of Education to recognize those schools who will be receiving these worthy investments.”

Schools in the 23rd District who have been awarded funding include:

Equipment Grants:

  • Bradford    Wyalusing Area SD               $24,999.84

Program Grants:

  • Bradford    Towanda Area SD                 $14,353.00
  • Bradford    Wyalusing Area SD               $19,999.80
  • Lycoming   Loyalsock Township SD        $19,961.00

School Resource Officer Grants:

  • Bradford    Sayre Area SD                       $60,000.00

IU Non-Public Equipment Grants:

  • Bradford    IU 17 – Epiphany School       $24,498.00
  • Bradford    IU 17 – St. Agnes                   $24,498.00
  • Lycoming   IU 17 – St. John Neumann Elem    $24,885.00
  • Lycoming   IU 17 – St. John Neumann HS        $24,885.00

PDE’s Office for Safe Schools offers equipment grants of up to $25,000; program grants of up to $20,000; School Police Officer (SPO) grants of up to $40,000; and School Resource Officer (SRO) grants of up to $60,000.

Each of the grants aims to assist schools in reducing unnecessary student disciplinary actions and promoting an environment of greater productivity, safety, and learning; and enhancing anti-violence efforts between schools and parents, local governments, law enforcement and community organizations.
